Ferries across the Red River Valley

Albion.jpg

The Albion ferry crossed the Red River at today's OK 98/ TX 37 between Idabel, McCurtain County, Oklahoma and Clarksville, Red River County, Texas. A free bridge replaced the ferry in the 1950s.

I've taken several ferries over the years, but none captivated me as much as the ferry that crossed from St. Francisville to New Roads (now gone) across the Mississippi. For a dollar, I took a trip back in time to savor the slower pace of a transportation method that embraced, rather than destroyed, the natural flow of the world.

The ferry I took was the last one to ply the Mississippi River, and within a year after my travels, it was replaced by a bridge. While some of us have been lucky enough to take a ferry across the Red River at one point, now those ferries are gone, too. So let's live vicariously through photographs and bits of research.
